How to Make Pepper balls

Pepper balls are used for self-defense scenarios. Each pepper ball is composed of chili pepper powder which is packed inside a plastic shell. The mixture is usually oleoresin capsicum (O.C.), which is the active ingredient in pepper spray. Upon impact the pepper ball will shatter releasing the O.C. powder which will immobilize anyone in the area. The pepper powder causes momentary blindness which may accompany a cough and breathing difficulties.

The Ingredients 
Gelatin: is added to the O.C. powder as a binder which helps form the mixture into a ball.
Plastic Mold:  is a must so it can give the mixture a spherical shape. 
Water: is crucial to mix the O.C. powder with the gelatin.

A spoon and a bowl is required to mix the ingredients.

Step-By-Step Guide

STEP 1: Prepare the ingredients: Measure the desired oleoresin capsicum powder and that you will need. The concentration settles over time so your pepper balls will be more or less potent depending on it.

STEP 2: Prep the ballistic gelatin: Follow the package instructions with precision.

STEP 3: Mix the ingredients: Combine the OC powder with ballistic gelatin in the bowl. Water should be added gradually. The consistency should be dough-like, not too wet but not too dry. The ball should hold together when pressed.

STEP 4: Shaping the Balls: Take small Portions of mixture. Press them firmly into your mold. This ensures they maintain the correct shape. If you have no mold available, hand-roll them into balls. Be careful though as this might result in irregular sizes.

Drying Process

STEP 5: Next, let them dry out completely. Room Temperature is good however a dehydrator is much better. The dehydrator will ensure that they properly harden and maintain their shape.

Storage

STEP 6: After drying, move the pepper balls to an airtight container. Place them in a dry area otherwise they might degrade and lose potency.

Testing (Optional)

STEP 7: Time for testing the pepper balls. If it’s safe and legal in your area, you can test fire them. Use appropriate safety gear and make sure they function correctly.
